Anthony Mundine's stunning call on boxing future

Anthony Mundine has vowed to restore his standing in the boxing world with a win over Michael Zerafa.

Countless people have tried to talk Anthony Mundine out of his upcoming fight with Michael Zerafa, a man 17 years his junior.

Jeff Fenech tried to talk him out of it. Mundine's own father has said he fears for his son's wellbeing.

Even boxing broadcaster Main Event has refused to show the bout, forcing Mundine to host a pay-per-view stream of the fight on his own website for a $29.95 fee. Mundine Zerafa fight on tv free

Still though, the 44-year-old Mundine has vowed to get 'back in the game' by defeating Zerafa on March 13 at Bendigo Stadium.

Speaking in an interview with Wide World of Sports to promote the fight, Mundine said he was keen to give his opponent a 'reality check' and win back some respect from boxing fans.

"I'm going to give him a reality check and redeem myself and get all of the glory from it. Nobody thinks I'm going to win," he said.

"Bro, If I win this fight I'm back in the game and have a lot more options. If something motivates me to fight again, maybe fight for a world title or a big-money fight."

Sceptics will point to Mundine's recent record, in which he has lost four of his previous five fights, as proof that Mundine is well past his prime.

The former NRL star is a $7.75 rank outsider to win, with Zerafa heavily favoured among bookmakers at $1.05 to win.

Mundine's previous fight, a split decision loss to John Wayne Parr which was supposed to be his boxing swansong, as well as a first round loss to Jeff Horn, haven't done him any favours. Mundine vs Zerafa live stream

However Mundine has claimed Horn's camp set him up for failure in the hours prior to their bout, enforcing strict weight limits on the veteran.

Anthony Mundine demands respect from Michael Zerafa

Anthony Mundine wants to retire from boxing on the high of a win over Michael Zerafa.

Mundine, 45, will fight professionally for the 59th, and almost certainly last time, when he meets Zerafa, 17 years younger than the former rugby league start, for the vacant WBA Oceania middleweight title on March 13. Zerafa vs Mundine h2h

“He’s a good fighter, but he nowhere near what he thinks he is,” Mundine said of Zerafa.

“I might not be in the prime of my career but I’m still an elite fighter, and I’m going to show him come the 13th.

“He’s looking past me, he’s disrespected me, and I want to earn that respect on the night.

“I’m going to talk to him throughout the whole night and let him know not to ever disrespect me the way he has.”

Mundine said beating Zerafa would not only prove his critics wrong but also ensure his professional career of more than 20 years ends on a high.

“This will more than likely be my last fight and I just want to go out with a victory,” he said.

Mundine has lost four of his past five fights but is adamant that he beat John Wayne Parr in 2019 and Danny Green in 2017 despite the judges thinking otherwise. Mundine Zerafa live coverage

“I’m not looking to take it to the scorecard, I’m looking to take him (Zerafa) out,” he said.

“I want take it out of the judges hands by stopping him or knocking him out.”

Mundine has spent the past two weeks training in Queensland in a backyard gym at Logan suburb Slacks Creek.

“There are no distractions there. I can get away and focus on my training and my recovery, and get in the best shape I can,” he said.

“It’s the calm before the storm.”

Anthony Mundine to get 'back in the game' with victory over Michael Zerafa

Anthony Mundine has always had a complicated relationship with logic.

Logic once told 'The Man' that leaving behind a $600,000 contract with the Dragons to take up boxing, with no amateur experience, was a hugely risky proposition.

Fifty-eight fights and $34 million later, it's easy to understand why Mundine places no relevance in conventional thinking. Zerafa Mundine fight stream free

And who could blame him? More often than not the Australian sporting icon has redefined the limits of what athletes can achieve by not giving any credence to the status quo.

This time, logic suggests the 45-year-old has next to no chance against Michael Zerafa on March 13 at Bendigo Stadium. Zerafa, 17 years younger than the former league player, is a $1.06 favourite with bookmakers. Mundine is paying $7.75 for the win.

Not everybody is on board with Mundine's plans to return, after Main Event turned its back on the fighter, forcing him to stream the clash for $29.95 on www.mundine.tv. Jeff Fenech has expressed fears for Mundine's health. His father also holds reservations. Fans and members of the media feel the same.

Despite an avalanche of opposition, within minutes of talking to 'The Man', it's clear his level of confidence is unswayed.

"I'm going to give him a reality check and redeem myself and get all of the glory from it. Nobody thinks I'm going to win," he told Wide World of Sports.

"Bro, If I win this fight I'm back in the game and have a lot more options. If something motivates me to fight again, maybe fight for a world title or a big-money fight."

No big deal right? Mundine has said far crazier things about far crazier things. And you can't expect anything less from him especially when he's selling possibly his last fight. But more often than not these things don't end well; he must know that. Watch Zerafa vs Mundine live

While Mundine will swear he truly believes he can beat Zerafa to cause one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, even the most ardent Mundine supporter can't ignore his recent track record and the pitfalls of similar comebacks by other boxers throughout the history of the sport.

Mundine has lost four of his last five fights. His last outing against John Wayne Parr in November 2019 was supposed to see Mundine sail into the sunset but a split decision loss changed all that.

Before the loss to the kickboxing icon, Mundine suffered one of the worst defeats of his career with a first round KO loss to Jeff Horn. But Mundine swears there was more to the story behind the Horn fight. The Queenslander's camp conspired to have him at his weakest by placing weight restrictions on him hours out from the fight, he claims.
