Tim Tszyu finally has the name, place, and date confirmed for his US debut after a rapid-fire lesson in the chaos of top-level international boxing.

Initially scheduled to fight Terrell Gausha in the co-main event of the Brian Castano-Jermell Charlo card on March 20 (AEDT) in Los Angeles, Tszyu will instead headline his own show against Gausha in Minneapolis on March 27.

“Finally,” a relieved Tszyu told foxsports.com.au on Thursday, before his brother Nikita’s professional debut, and after his own plans were locked in.

Tszyu last fought in November; a convincing decision victory over Takeshi Inoue cementing his place among the world’s elite, and elevating him to mandatory status for Castano’s WBO title.

But a Castano-Charlo sequel got in the way. And then, a Castano injury threw Tszyu’s US takeover into chaos as the super welterweight title rematch was scrapped.

Tszyu put up his hand to fight Charlo, but is happy to settle for Gausha on his own card, knowing a win would almost certainly mean a title shot next.

“I was ready to go,” Tszyu said. “But the boys are contracted to fight against each other. I guess for Charlo, he didn’t want to risk it. Big risk, not much of a reward-type fight.”

Tszyu’s Main Event journey began in 2019, and since, it’s been smooth sailing with the Aussie star becoming accustomed to plans being made around him.

His jump to international waters has been far choppier.

Not that he’s complaining.

“These things happen in boxing, it’s quite unpredictable,” he said. “But you just have to move on. And you know, at the end of the day, I haven’t achieved my status as a world champion, so I can’t be declaring dates and this, and that.

“I just have to go with the flow. It’s all part of the process and journey.”

Tszyu has been calling for an international fight ever since he dethroned Jeff Horn to become the face of Australian boxing.

“It’s time to go global,” Tszyu believes.

And yet, the 27-year-old can appreciate what the last two years — kept on Australian shores by COVID-19 — have allowed him to do.

“It’s been a blessing in disguise, because I’ve learned a lot in the last two years … [I’ve gotten] more experience, more ring time,” Tszyu explained.

“It’s all going to make me more dangerous when I fight there.”

Tszyu will jet to the US in the next week or so, with the full team, including brother Nikita who fights Thursday (AEDT) night.

Tszyu has had sparring help from Issac Hardman, Clay Waterman, and Jack Bowen.

But not his brother.

“We’ve done it once,” Tszyu said. “Our grandpa banned us.”
